All three are on the official NJ MVC driving school list. Prices below are as each school published them on its own website when we read it on October 15, 2026; confirm with the school before you book.

Where Trenton drivers take the road test
Searching for the "Trenton NJ DMV" leads to the MVC office at 120 South Stockton Street. According to the MVC locations page, that office is a vehicle center, a regional service center and a licensing center for REAL ID only, by appointment. It does not give road tests.
The closest road test site is Bakers Basin, 3200 Brunswick Pike (Route 1) in Lawrenceville. A few things worth knowing:
- Road tests are by appointment only, booked on the MVC scheduling site.
- Bakers Basin is one of the sites where a driver who passes can get the license issued on the same visit. These sites take credit cards only, no cash (NJ Driver Manual, revised 4/2026).
- Practice driving on the test course or in the parallel parking area is not allowed.
- If you don't have a car that qualifies, you may rent a driving school car. Several schools say on their websites that they bring a car to Bakers Basin; they are compared on the Bakers Basin page.
Trenton roads to watch
These come from New Jersey Department of Transportation records. They are worth knowing as a new driver, and worth practicing around with an instructor before you drive them alone.
NJDOT counts 19 fatal crashes since January 2000 on Route 129 between Route 29 and Route 1, all at its three signalized intersections: 10 at Lalor Street (8 of them pedestrian deaths), 7 at Hamilton Avenue (4 pedestrian) and 2 at Cass Street (both pedestrian). (NJDOT, June 2024)
What that means behind the wheel: come to these signals ready to stop, never speed up for a yellow, and look for people crossing before you turn. NJDOT added a red-light extension system and longer crossing times there in 2022 (NJDOT), and a larger rebuild is planned, with construction estimated for 2029 or 2030.
Route 29 along the river. NJDOT's Route 29 boulevard study found crashes above the statewide average, with the Calhoun Street interchange the worst spot (99 crashes, 73 of them rear-end) and speeding over the 40 mph limit a common problem. That data is from 2001 to 2003, so treat it as background, but the lesson holds: leave room at the Calhoun Street ramps and keep to the limit.
What New Jersey requires
New drivers on the early permit path need 6 hours behind the wheel with a licensed driving school before driving with a supervisor. Before the road test, permit holders under 21 need at least 6 months of supervised practice, including 50 hours with 10 after dark. Our 6-hour certificate guide explains the paperwork, and what happens at the road test covers the test itself.
