Bakers Basin Road Test: Tips, What to Bring and What Gets Checked

Taking your road test at Bakers Basin MVC in Lawrenceville, NJ? What to bring, the car rules, the skills the examiner checks, how to practice, and schools with a test car.

Bakers Basin is the New Jersey MVC road test site on Route 1 in Lawrenceville, the closest one for Trenton, Hamilton, Ewing and most of Mercer County. Most people who fail a road test fail before or in the first few minutes: the wrong papers, a car that gets turned away, or a rushed first maneuver. This guide covers what to sort out before the day, what the examiner checks, and how to practice without breaking the rules.

Before test day: the papers

The MVC turns people away for missing documents, so check these the night before (MVC road test page):

  • The same 6 Points of ID you used for your permit. Originals only.
  • Your validated permit, legible and not laminated.
  • A supervising driver who is at least 21 and has held a New Jersey license for at least 3 years.
  • Under 21? At least 6 months of supervised practice, including 50 hours (10 after dark), and a completed BA-CSD form from your supervising driver.
  • Red reflective decals on the plates if you are under 21. They cost $4 a pair at any licensing center if you didn't buy them with your permit.

The car: the most common way to lose a test before it starts

Your car needs a valid registration, insurance card and a current inspection sticker, and the examiner has to be able to reach the parking brake or foot brake from the passenger seat. The MVC will refuse the test if the car:

  • is a self-parking model, or has tinted windows,
  • has poor brakes, a bad parking brake, unsafe tires, missing seatbelts or a fast idle,
  • is missing the decals, or is unreasonably dirty inside.

Backup cameras and parking sensors are allowed. A rental car only works if you are named on the rental contract. You may rent a driving school's car, which solves all of this at once: it is dual-controlled, inspected and familiar to the examiners. Compare schools that bring a car to Bakers Basin on the Bakers Basin page.

What the examiner checks

The MVC lists these skills (source). Next to each is what to practice.

Skill on the MVC listHow to practice it
Driving in reverseBack up straight for several car lengths, looking over your shoulder, at walking speed.
Stopping at signsCome to a full stop behind the line, count a beat, then look both ways before you go.
Nearing corners and intersectionsSlow early, cover the brake and check for people crossing.
Stopping smoothlyBrake early and gently so the car doesn't lurch.
Sitting properlyAdjust seat and mirrors before you start; both hands on the wheel.
Turning aroundPractice a three-point turn on a quiet street: signal, check traffic every time you change direction.
Steering properlyHand-over-hand or push-pull steering, not one palm on the wheel.
Parallel parkingPractice between two cones or cars until you can do it in one or two tries.
Yielding right of wayAt every turn, ask yourself who goes first, and wait for pedestrians.

The MVC says the test is driven in an off-road testing area or on a public road course. Ask your driving school which one to expect at Bakers Basin on your date.

How to practice (and where not to)

Don't practice on the test course. The NJ Driver Manual says no practice driving is allowed on the test course or in the parallel parking area. Practice in an empty parking lot and on quiet residential streets instead, then finish with a lesson in traffic.

A good plan for the last two weeks:

  1. Parallel parking and the three-point turn every day. These are where nerves show most.
  2. One practice drive on Route 1 at a quiet time, so you are not surprised by the traffic around the site on the day.
  3. A lesson with a school the day of, or the day before. Many schools offer an hour of practice right before the test in the same car you'll test in.

For the mistakes that end a test early, read what happens at a road test and why people fail.

After the test

Pass: the examiner endorses your permit, and at Bakers Basin you can have your license issued on the same visit. Fail: you must wait at least 14 days before you test again, so book the next slot early.
