Driving Lessons in Princeton, NJ: Top Schools and the Roads to Practice

Driving lessons in Princeton, NJ: the top-rated local schools, what Nassau Street and Route 1 ask of a new driver, where to take the road test, and what lessons cost.

Learning to drive in Princeton means learning two very different kinds of road. Downtown, Nassau Street runs past the university with crosswalks every block, parked cars and a steady stream of students on foot. A few minutes east, Route 1 is a fast, multi-lane highway. A good instructor will get you comfortable with both before your road test. Here are the top-rated schools with a Princeton address, what to practice, and where Princeton drivers take the test.

What the schools publish: American School of Driving's website lists road test packages from $115 to $295, 6-hour courses for 16-year-olds and for adults, and pickup from home or school. Fear Away Driving School lists a 6-hour program, custom lessons and road test preparation, also with pickup. Princeton roads to practice

Nassau Street (Route 27)

Nassau Street is Princeton's main street: shops on one side, the university on the other, parallel parking along both curbs and marked crossings in the middle of blocks as well as at corners. Walk Bike Princeton's crash map shows clusters of pedestrian and bicycle crashes along Nassau Street, especially at its four-way intersections, and a pedestrian was seriously injured at a marked mid-block crossing there on December 12, 2025 (Town Topics, January 2026). The town approved safety changes for the street in 2023 that are now going in.

The New Jersey crosswalk rule

When a pedestrian is in a marked crosswalk, or crossing at a corner, you must come to a complete stop, not just slow down, and stay stopped until they have cleared your lane and the next lane in your direction. Never pass a car that has stopped for a pedestrian. (NJ Driver Manual)

What to practice here: driving slowly enough to stop for any crosswalk, watching for car doors and cars pulling out of parking spaces, and parallel parking on a real street with traffic behind you.

Downtown side streets

Off Nassau Street, the older residential streets are narrow, often with cars parked on both sides and room for only one moving car at a time. Practice judging the gap, pulling over to let an oncoming car through, and keeping a steady, slow speed with your hands ready to stop.

Route 1 and the roads to it

Route 1 runs along Princeton's eastern edge with high-speed traffic, frequent lane changes and busy shopping-center entrances. Washington Road and Alexander Road link it to campus and downtown. Practice merging at speed, checking your blind spot every time, and keeping a safe following distance. Construction closes these links from time to time; NJDOT closed the Washington Road bridge over the D&R Canal for repairs in 2024 and detoured drivers to Harrison Street and Alexander Road (NJDOT), so check 511nj.org before a lesson on that route.

Campus and event days

Princeton University move-in, graduation and home football games bring heavy foot and car traffic downtown. They are worth one supervised practice drive, and worth avoiding the day before your test.

Where Princeton drivers take the road test

There is no MVC office in Princeton. The closest road test site is Bakers Basin on Route 1 in Lawrenceville, where a driver who passes can get the license issued the same day (bring a credit card). Edison (Kilmer Road) is the next closest to the north. Read our Bakers Basin road test tips for what to bring and what the examiner checks.

What New Jersey requires

Teens on the early permit path need 6 hours behind the wheel with a licensed driving school before they can practice with a supervising driver. Before the road test, permit holders under 21 need at least 6 months of supervised practice, including 50 hours with 10 after dark. See our 6-hour certificate guide for the paperwork.

FAQ

How many driving schools are in Princeton, NJ?

Five licensed driving schools have a Princeton address on the official state list as of November 2026, and many more in Mercer and Middlesex counties serve the town.

What does "not verified" mean on a school card?

It means the school is on New Jersey's official license list but hasn't confirmed its details with RoadVerified yet. A verified school has completed our checks; see what verified means. It isn't a rating of teaching quality either way.

Where is the road test for Princeton drivers?

Most take it at Bakers Basin, on Route 1 in Lawrenceville. Road tests are by appointment on the MVC scheduling site.
