What to bring and road-test vehicle requirements

  • Supervised practice first. At least 6 months for permit holders under 21 (including at least 50 hours, 10 of them after dark, with a completed BA-CSD form from the supervising driver), 3 months for those 21 and over, and 20 days for non-GDL drivers.
  • What to bring: the same 6 Points of ID used for the permit, a valid permit, an accompanying driver who is at least 21 and has held a New Jersey license for at least 3 years, and red reflective decals on the plates for drivers under 21 ($4 a pair at any licensing center).
  • The car: registered, insured and with a current inspection sticker, and the examiner must be able to reach the parking or foot brake. A car is turned away if it is self-parking, has tinted windows, lacks the decals or has defects such as poor brakes or unsafe tires. Backup cameras and parking sensors are allowed. Renting a driving school car is allowed; a rental car only if you are on the contract.
  • On the day: the test takes about 10 to 15 minutes, in an off-road testing area or on a public road course. Practice driving on the test course or in the parallel parking area is not allowed.
  • If you fail, you must wait at least 14 days before you test again.
