New Jersey MVC Offices and Road Test Centers
The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission gives road tests at 15 sites. Here is each one, how to book, what to bring, and the schools that say they provide a car for the test, with every other MVC office below.
We are not the MVC. Road tests are by appointment only, booked on the MVC's own scheduling site.

How the New Jersey road test works
- Book first. Road tests are by appointment, online at the MVC scheduling site or at a driver testing center.
- Supervised practice first. At least 6 months for permit holders under 21 (including at least 50 hours, 10 of them after dark, with a completed BA-CSD form from the supervising driver), 3 months for those 21 and over, and 20 days for non-GDL drivers.
- What to bring: the same 6 Points of ID used for the permit, a valid permit, an accompanying driver who is at least 21 and has held a New Jersey license for at least 3 years, and red reflective decals on the plates for drivers under 21 ($4 a pair at any licensing center).
- The car: registered, insured and with a current inspection sticker, and the examiner must be able to reach the parking or foot brake. A car is turned away if it is self-parking, has tinted windows, lacks the decals or has defects such as poor brakes or unsafe tires. Backup cameras and parking sensors are allowed. Renting a driving school car is allowed; a rental car only if you are on the contract.
- On the day: the test takes about 10 to 15 minutes, in an off-road testing area or on a public road course. Practice driving on the test course or in the parallel parking area is not allowed.
- If you fail, you must wait at least 14 days before you test again.
At Wayne, Lodi, Randolph, Rahway, Bakers Basin, Eatontown, Delanco, a driver who passes can have the license issued on site. These sites take credit cards only, no cash.
