Book through the official MVC website

Road tests are by appointment only. Schedule or change yours on the MVC scheduling site (telegov.njportal.com), or at a driver testing center. Pass the knowledge and vision tests first.

What to bring and road-test vehicle requirements

Supervised practice first. At least 6 months for permit holders under 21 (including at least 50 hours, 10 of them after dark, with a completed BA-CSD form from the supervising driver), 3 months for those 21 and over, and 20 days for non-GDL drivers.
What to bring: the same 6 Points of ID used for the permit, a valid permit, an accompanying driver who is at least 21 and has held a New Jersey license for at least 3 years, and red reflective decals on the plates for drivers under 21 ($4 a pair at any licensing center).
The car: registered, insured and with a current inspection sticker, and the examiner must be able to reach the parking or foot brake. A car is turned away if it is self-parking, has tinted windows, lacks the decals or has defects such as poor brakes or unsafe tires. Backup cameras and parking sensors are allowed. Renting a driving school car is allowed; a rental car only if you are on the contract.
On the day: the test takes about 10 to 15 minutes, in an off-road testing area or on a public road course. Practice driving on the test course or in the parallel parking area is not allowed.
If you fail, you must wait at least 14 days before you test again.

From the MVC road test page and the Driver Manual (revised 4/2026), checked 2026-11-01.
