Texas 6-Hour Adult Drivers Ed: Who Needs It

Texans 18 to 24 need a 6-hour adult drivers ed course and the free ITAD video before the road test. Who's exempt, the 90-day rule and steps to a license.

If you are 18 through 24 and getting your first Texas driver license, you must complete a 6-hour adult driver education course before you test. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) says the course is required for all persons between the ages of 18 and 24, and that adults 25 and older do not need it.

You will also need a separate, free video program called Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) before your driving test. Here is how the pieces fit together.

Key takeaways

  • Ages 18 to 24: the 6-hour adult course is required before testing for a first license.
  • Age 25 and older: no drivers ed required, but you still need the ITAD video before the driving test.
  • New residents 18 or older who surrender a valid out-of-state license are exempt from the adult course.
  • ITAD is free, about an hour long, and its certificate is valid for 90 days.
  • Bring a printed ITAD certificate to the driving test. A phone screen won't do.
  • Take the course from a provider licensed by TDLR.

Who needs the 6-hour course

According to DPS, the requirement depends on your age when you apply:

Your age Adult drivers ed ITAD before driving test
18 through 24 Required (DPS) Required
25 and older Not required Required (DPS)

Exemption for new residents. DPS waives the adult course for new residents 18 or older who surrender a valid out-of-state license.

If you are under 18, the rules are different: teens take a 24-hour classroom course plus behind-the-wheel training, and a longer teen version of the Impact video. See Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD): What It Is and When to Take It.

How to take the course

Adult driver education is offered by driving schools certified in Texas. DPS lists several course types, including traditional classroom and online courses from certified driving schools. DPS points families to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) for details on these options. TDLR's DESSearch tool includes a provider search and lets you validate a driver education certificate number.

When you finish, the provider issues a certificate. The ITAD FAQ refers to this as the ADE-1317 certificate. Keep it with your other licensing documents.

Before you pay, confirm that the provider is licensed by TDLR, and ask how and when you will receive the certificate. For a list of good questions, see Questions to Ask Before You Pay a Driving School. Prices vary between providers; ask for the total cost in writing.

Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD)

ITAD is a distracted-driving program run by DPS. It is separate from the 6-hour course and does not replace it.

  • What it covers: the dangers of distracted driving, especially cell phone use and multitasking, with Texas statistics and real stories.
  • Length: DPS describes it as a 1-hour video. The ITAD FAQ says it is split into three modules, and each module must be finished before the next. You do not have to finish in one sitting.
  • Cost: Free. DPS offers ITAD free of charge.
  • When: after you finish your 6-hour course and before your driving skills test. The FAQ says ITAD should be completed after the adult course.
  • Validity: the ITAD certificate is only valid for 90 days. If you don't pass the driving test within that window, you must take ITAD again.
  • Proof: you must give the testing office a printed paper copy, not an electronic one. You can log in to the ITAD site to retrieve and reprint your certificate.

Timing tip: don't take ITAD weeks before you have a road test date. Book the test first if you can, then complete ITAD so the 90-day clock works for you.

Steps to your first Texas license (ages 18 to 24)

Based on DPS's apply for a Texas driver license page:

  1. Complete the 6-hour adult driver education course with a TDLR-licensed provider.
  2. Complete ITAD and print the certificate. It must be dated within 90 days of your driving test.
  3. Gather documents: proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful presence, Texas residency, identity and your Social Security number. If you own a vehicle, bring its registration and insurance, or a statement that you don't own one.
  4. Schedule an appointment at a driver license office and complete the application (form DL-14A).
  5. At the office: give your thumbprints and signature, have your photo taken, pay the fee and pass the vision exam.
  6. Pass the written knowledge test and the driving skills test. You can take the driving test at a DPS office or through an approved third-party provider.
  7. Leave with a temporary license. Check it for errors. DPS says the permanent card typically arrives by mail within 2 to 3 weeks.

Why Texas requires this

The adult course and ITAD both focus on the habits that cause crashes, especially distraction. DPS designed ITAD around good people making poor choices: ordinary drivers who glance at a phone at the wrong moment. Adult beginners often learn quickly from friends and family, but a structured course fills gaps in the rules and in risk awareness.
